Com apenas 8 anos de idade, ele substitui um sanfoneiro em festa tradicional na Fazenda Caiçara, no Araripe, Exu, a pedido de amigos do pai. Canta e toca a noite inteira e, pela primeira vez, recebe o que hoje se chamaria cachê. O dinheiro, 20 mil réis, “amolece” o espírito da mãe, que não o queria sanfoneiro.
A partir daí, os convites para animar festas – ou sambas, como se dizia na época – tornam-se frequentes. Antes mesmo de completar 16 anos, Luiz de Januário, Lula ou Luiz Gonzaga já é nome conhecido no Araripe e em toda a redondeza, como Canoa Brava, Viração, Bodocó e Rancharia.
Um século depois, muitas são as histórias que seus companheiros têm para contar desse homem que fez o povo brasileiro conhecer a dureza da vida no sertão, mas também levou muita alegria com sua sanfona para todo o país.
