A partir de 2015, o Brasil vai produzir toda a vacina contra o vírus da gripe A necessária para suprir a demanda nacional. Para a campanha de 2013, o Instituto Butantan, fabricante das vacinas brasileiras, produziu 15% do total aplicado. O laboratório francês Sanofi Pasteur transferiu a tecnologia que tornou possível a fabricação. Para a vacinação em 2015 serão produzidas 44 milhões de doses.
Outros 14 medicamentos biológicos terão fabricação 100% nacional, seis para câncer (entre eles o de mama e a leucemia), quatro para artrite reumatoide, um para diabetes, um cicatrizante, um hormônio do crescimento e uma vacina para alergia. De acordo com o Ministério da Saúde, a economia com a produção será R$ 225 milhões por ano. Os medicamentos biológicos, feitos a partir de material vivo e cuja produção envolve biologia molecular, são produtos de última geração e de alto custo. O grupo representa 43% dos gastos do governo com medicamentos, R$ 4 bilhões por ano.
Para a fabricação no Brasil, foram feitas 27 parcerias com oito laboratórios públicos e 17 privados. Ao todo, são 90 parcerias desse tipo, que envolvem a transferência de tecnologia de 77 produtos. Entre os medicamentos estão a L-asparaginase, utilizada para tratamento de leucemia aguda, cujo fabricante anunciou, em dezembro, que não o produziria mais e que só havia estoque para os próximos seis meses. Para o ministro da Saúde, Alexandre Padilha, a produção do medicamento no Brasil representa segurança para os pacientes. O Trastuzumabe é outro remédio que será produzido no país. Recentemente incorporado à cartela do Sistema Único de Saúde, serve para o tratamento do câncer de mama.
O Ministério da Saúde anunciou que o Brasil terá a primeira fábrica para produção de remédios biológicos a partir de célula vegetal (cenoura e tabaco), instalada em Euzébio, no Ceará. A construção está prevista para ter início em 2014 e deve custar R$ 170 milhões. Serão feitos medicamentos para o tratamento de doenças raras e a primeira vacina do mundo a partir de uma planta, contra a febre amarela.
