Araraquara tem maior potencial de contaminação do Guarani
Ao todo, são 74 pontos identificados em 17 cidades
Uma pesquisa da Companhia de Tecnologia de Saneamento Ambiental (Cetesb) identificou 74 pontos de contaminação do Aquífero Guarani em municípios da região Central. O número coloca a região em primeiro lugar no ranking de irregularidades. Os principais problemas são causados por aterros sanitários e postos de combustíveis.
Na área de Araraquara, formada por 17 cidades estão 74 pontos de contaminação, sendo 69 já confirmados e outros cinco ainda em investigação. Uma das áreas apontadas no estudo é o lixão de Araraquara. As 150 toneladas depositadas diariamente no local terão que ser enviadas para outro destino a partir de 1º de agosto. Um acordo entre Ministério Público e prefeitura prevê a desativação.
De acordo com a Cetesb, o lugar, usado há mais de duas décadas, não é impermeabilizado e já contaminou o solo. Uma situação parecida aconteceu com o antigo lixão de São Carlos.
A preocupação é que o Aquífero Guarani, um dos mais importantes reservatórios de água doce da América do Sul, seja atingido. “Nós sabemos que o lençol freático e o solo estão contaminados. Apesar disso, uma rocha ainda protege o aquífero e a maioria das áreas da região”, afirmou o gerente regional da Cetesb, José Jorge Guimarães.
No Brasil, o aquífero está sob vários estados e também nas regiões de Araraquara e Ribeirão Preto. Ao todo, são 43 mil quilômetros cúbicos.
O levantamento também aponta indústrias e postos de combustíveis da região como fontes contaminadoras. O estudo encontrou mais de 300 áreas de risco no aquífero em todo o Estado de São Paulo. A partir dessa pesquisa, o governo quer criar uma lei ambiental com normas mais restritivas.
Para o presidente do Instituto Internacional de Ecologia, José Galizia Tundisi, o diagnóstico é importante, mas é preciso ter ações práticas, já que o aquifero é considerado de grande importância ecológica, econômica e social. “É muito mais barato prevenir do que tratar uma futura contaminação”, explicou.
